CinemaSerf on Luther: The Fallen Sun

The initial run of this intense police show was fantastic; however, things have really hit a low point for this compelling and unusual protagonist. The plot has become so unbelievably unrealistic that it brought to mind something Mark Gatiss might have created for "Sherlock" prior to seeing "No Time To Die" (2021), leading him to think – not quite! It all begins when a young man named “Callum” is pulled from his nighttime cleaning job by an anonymous phone call. Before we know it, “Luther” (Idris Elba) arrives at a crime scene where the boy is nowhere to be found but a woman’s body has appeared in a car that had been missing for quite some time. Then "Robey" (Andy Serkis), who seems entirely harmless, appears and before long our favorite officer finds himself imprisoned for consistently disregarding or breaking regulations, and this rather wicked figure goes on to demonstrate that evil can triumph – and on an impressive level. To be honest, the narrative is absurd, and as the film drags on for more than two hours I found it difficult to stay interested as it shifted from suicide attempts to increasingly violent murders—but what’s driving him remains a complete mystery. He seems to have gained control over a massive network of technology and individuals to carry out his nefarious scheme, but none of it feels even remotely believable. The final twenty minutes are simply ridiculous, and overall the writing is quite poor: “They'll kill you John” - “I can live with that!” – there’s no sense of irony in those lines at all. This seems like a rather blatant effort to profit from a well-liked character who was made memorable by a talented actor and a series of well-crafted stories; this film has disregarded them entirely.
