Lucy tends to provoke strong responses; it's a science fiction action thriller that often splits audiences from the very beginning. It’s best approached as a purely cinematic experience, something to enjoy like popcorn entertainment that attempts to be more thoughtful but ultimately comes across as silly – albeit incredibly entertaining. Luc Besson wrote and directed this story about Scarlett Johansson, who is tricked into becoming a drug mule with drugs hidden inside her body. The substance is entirely new, and when things go wrong and the drugs enter Scarlett’s system, she becomes both a danger and a potential savior for humanity. It's been labeled pretentious, among other things, due to its science elements, which is completely reasonable. Anyone expecting rigorous scientific exploration will be sorely let down. Besson and his producers clearly believed they had an important message, hoping to challenge viewers with something profound and meaningful. However, we weren’t given donepezil, so we couldn't all magically gain the ability to understand things like Bradley Cooper does in the film. I found it a thoroughly enjoyable ride for about two-thirds of its length; when Scarlett is taking down her enemies, driven by revenge, it really grabs your attention and excites the senses. The ending, that big final act, frustrated me, and judging by Morgan Freeman’s expression (who seemed to be just coasting along), he felt similarly. I did have fun with it, but if someone told me they absolutely hated the film? I'd understand and invite them back to my place to mess around with chemicals. It gets a 7/10 from me.
