“Luca” portrays a young man living a submerged existence, where he tends to fish daily before heading back to his mother’s house – though she can be quite demanding. His curiosity is sparked when he sees a fishing vessel close to the surface and becomes interested in what's happening on land. While searching through debris, he meets "Alberto," who turns out to lead a double life, possessing both an underwater dwelling and a home high up in a crumbling tower. The two quickly become good friends, and “Luca” finds himself spending more time as a human boy than as a sea creature. To avoid his parents’ notice, the boys decide to move into town, hoping to earn enough money for a "Vespa." They find one – it's old and worn, but how will they get the funds? A possible solution lies in winning the annual Porto Rosso Cup, which requires them to outsmart the local bully, “Ercole.” He isn’t particularly violent, just an arrogant fellow with a sense of superiority. The boys need to be careful about one thing: exposure to water reverts them to their sea monster forms, which would frighten the townspeople and put them in danger. I found this film quite enjoyable. It's a straightforward tale about two boys who forge a friendship and share dreams of escaping to a new world full of incredible possibilities. There’s even a touch of jealousy as "Alberto" feels left out when “Luca” and their friend “Giulia” begin spending more time together, particularly when they mention willingly attending school! The story clearly explores themes of family, loyalty, and enjoyment, with plenty of quirky Italian phrases woven into the energetic conversations (forgive me if you’re called Bruno!). It avoids being overly sweet or sentimental compared to many Pixar films; it's a story about not fearing what you don't understand, and it's undeniably a celebration of male friendship.
