I took in Love Wedding Repeat as part of a casual viewing session of romantic comedies, so naturally, comparisons to other films came to mind. Certain familiar tropes appear: a couple who form a strong connection only to be kept apart by seemingly unavoidable circumstances that could have been easily avoided; and a bride facing the prospect of her marriage being derailed by an ex-lover with questionable intentions. I wasn’t entirely persuaded she was truly in love with her fiancé, although the man attempting to interfere seemed like a complete disappointment. There were also several elements I would have gladly done without. The unnecessary character who wore a kilt (despite not having Scottish heritage) and spent an excessive amount of time detailing how uncomfortable it was, even physically adjusting it repeatedly. It didn’t strike me as genuinely humorous enough to outweigh the feeling of revulsion. The narration also proved distracting; voiceovers feel like a common crutch in movies these days, and I often question whether they're used to mask weaknesses in the writing that stronger dialogue could resolve. Lastly, the film adopted a director’s cut approach by presenting multiple endings with an exploratory “what if?” premise. I’m not convinced that combining both endings resulted in one truly satisfying conclusion. Despite these issues, I did finish watching it and found some parts enjoyable. I kept hoping to feel more invested in the characters' journeys. It’s not a full-throated endorsement, but the movie does make an effort. Your enjoyment of it might even exceed my own.
