It brought me great pleasure to witness John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands, his wife, portraying siblings struggling with significant mental health challenges in 'Love Streams'. My previous experience with them together was limited to 'Opening Night', which is my personal favorite of Cassavetes’s films. The screenplay was a collaboration between him and Ted Allan, the playwright who created the 1980 stage production; Jon Voight originally performed the role of Robert Harmon onstage. Although I find his initial film, 'Shadows', less appealing because I don't believe the actors were skilled enough to manage that level of improvisation, by the 1980s he had clearly developed—and possibly even mastered—his filmmaking style. It’s a truly rewarding experience for both stars and Seymour Cassel, who is consistently delightful to watch. If you have a sibling with whom you share affection but are presently experiencing difficulties in communication, I highly recommend watching the film alongside them; it has the potential to offer valuable self-discovery. This may very well represent Golan-Globus Films’s greatest achievement as well.
