It brought back memories of "Othello," that board game—not the creature from folklore! “Taeko” (Fumino Kimura) shares her life with her second husband, "Jirô" (Kento Nagayama), who has embraced her energetic young son, "Keita" (Tetta Shimada). Keita is quite skilled at the game and a member of an online community that excels at it; he's brimming with excitement because it’s his birthday. Taeko enjoys taking baths but sometimes neglects to drain the water afterward... This oversight leads to an incident which brings her former husband, "Paku" (Atomu Sunada), back into their lives. He is now homeless and deaf, and since they both work for the local government, Jirô suggests that she tries to find him a place to live—though perhaps not entirely out of kindness. His reappearance causes everyone involved to be scrutinized, with past choices and future possibilities examined not only for them but also for grandparents who longed for a grandchild and people from their earlier experiences. The film explores the predictable feelings of remorse and suffering, yet it avoids being overly sentimental or dwelling too heavily on the sadness inherent in this situation filled with regrets and unanswered questions. Young Shimada is entertaining to watch initially, and there’s an undeniable connection as the adults navigate their circumstances. While the movie might feel a bit drawn out, Kôji Fukada's pacing allows the characters to develop realistically, resulting in a pleasantly touching story that has moments of dark humor about family.
