I was completely captivated by Rose Glass' daring and unrestrained “Love Lies Bleeding,” a dark tale of romance, violence, and the possibility of finding your way back. This film, which blends a lesbian love story with an intense thriller, stood out as one of my favorites from this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Lou (Kristen Stewart), who works at a gym and spends her days doing unpleasant chores like cleaning toilets, experiences a dramatic shift when the bodybuilder Jackie (Katy O’Brian) enters her life. Lou quickly becomes infatuated with Jackie's strength, and invites her to share her home. Driven by ambition, Jackie begins training for a competition in Las Vegas—and starts using steroids at Lou’s suggestion. Their plan involves an ambitious road trip westward, but a shocking violent incident involving Lou’s sister (Jena Malone) and brother-in-law (Dave Franco) throws everything into disarray. The reality of Lou’s family's criminal history is exposed, complicating her relationship with Jackie and drawing them both into a chaotic situation. Glass has crafted a film that feels like a wonderfully sensational crime thriller. Her unique style comes through in a narrative brimming with underlying anger and intensity—and it contains some of the most striking use of magical realism I’ve ever encountered on screen. Lou and Jackie are deeply imperfect individuals, but you find yourself wanting them to succeed as a couple. They're responsible for terrible acts, yet their connection feels destined to be an unforgettable love story. Stewart and O’Brian give remarkable performances, portraying their characters with a fierce energy that reflects the passion and desire of their complicated relationship. Their chemistry is undeniable and intense, which adds another layer of realism to the story. The rest of the cast is also excellent, including Anna Baryshnikov, Ed Harris, Franco, and Malone. “Love Lies Bleeding” is a powerful and unsettling film that stays with you long after it’s over. Beyond the violence and desire for retribution, it's a queer romance that feels both deeply romantic and incredibly urgent.
