It’s hard to think of many things more disappointing in a movie than when it strains to appear provocative. Sometimes this approach might trick a few viewers occasionally, but ultimately, it exposes the lack of substance at its core. Kristen Stewart portrays Lou, an employee at a fitness center who finds herself drawn to Jackie, a female bodybuilder. A sexual relationship develops between them. Ed Harris plays Lou’s father, depicted as the town's troublemaker, and her sister suffers repeated abuse from her unsettling brother-in-law, JJ (Dave Franco). Violence escalates, leading to a desperate attempt by everyone involved to conceal a murder. The initial portion of the film is reasonably engaging while introducing the characters. However, it begins to unravel as the story progresses, jumping between so many different moods that it's difficult to keep up. Unintended moments of humor and confusion become increasingly common. The final result is simply awful. A significant issue arises from how the movie depicts individuals who have experienced abuse. Those who initially seem supportive later inflict violence upon her. Is this supposed to be a protagonist? Kristen Stewart delivers a decent performance, but Ed Harris stands out as the strongest element of the film. Still, none of the characters are developed sufficiently; there’s nothing about any of them that makes you want to see what happens next. I don't require movie characters to be likable, but they should possess qualities that make their journey worthwhile from beginning to end.
