LOVE HURTS struggles to make a case for its existence, even at its brief running time, in spite of Ke Huy Quan’s and Ariana DeBose's clear abilities. They both inject their characteristic charm and dedication into their roles, but the movie lets them down with its lack of originality, humor that doesn’t quite work, and an absence of a clear story flow. A few fight scenes are handled reasonably well, offering brief sparks of interest, though these moments can't make up for the uninspired plot and characters who don't get enough development. Considering how much it tries to mix action and comedy, the film doesn’t offer sufficient amounts of either element to hold your attention. The most disappointing aspect is that LOVE HURTS seems to miss opportunities at every stage. The screenplay feels like an early version that needed more work, with confusing plot developments and careless storytelling decisions. There's simply not enough substance to connect with. The action sequences aren’t plentiful or imaginative enough to be memorable, and the attempts at humor frequently fall flat. Ultimately, what sticks with you is how much better suited both Quan and DeBose were for a stronger project. Rating: D+
