The film begins as if intending to be comedic, which would work if that were truly its goal; however, when viewers anticipate action and instead receive clumsy humor, it feels jarring. The overall feel of the movie is inconsistent. It centers on Marvin Gable (Ke Huy Quan), a former assassin who now works in real estate, but doesn’t explore this idea very well. He's placed into circumstances where his history returns to trouble him, yet there isn’t any proper groundwork laid, no genuine sense of importance, and no explanation for why events unfold as they do. The shifts between scenes are hurried, and the speed at which things progress feels like the script was assembled without a clear plan. There's hardly a plot to speak of; just a series of random occurrences with little preparation. The directing is problematic. Scenes escalate without any reason, and significant events occur so quickly that they lack impact. The cinematography is equally disappointing, particularly because the camera frequently circles Marvin whenever he’s contemplating something, which happens far too often. At one point, the movie devotes nearly half of the second act to him repeatedly stating that he must “face his past.” It's tiresome. The action sequences aren’t much better either. One character throws knives at the ground—it's unclear what they were targeting. Others seem to forget they have weapons, or they fire directly as if participating in a first-person shooter game. The action is so staged and predictable that it fails to create any tension. The performances don’t improve things either. Ke Huy Quan does what he can, but the part simply doesn't suit him. The supporting actors seem to be overacting, especially during attempts to develop their characters. It feels as though emotional depth was added afterward rather than being incorporated naturally. Then there's the writing itself, which is a separate problem entirely. The lines are repetitive; Marvin narrates everything he’s about to do instead of just doing it. This makes the movie feel simplistic, like the audience needs every thought and decision explained. Even the music choices raise questions. The score doesn’t align with the mood of the scenes, which only adds to the sense of disconnection. It's as if tracks were chosen at random without regard for how they would fit into the story. By the time the big finale arrives, the movie has already lost any sense of direction. When Marvin finally confronts his past (both literally and figuratively), it happens in the most absurd way possible, with one-on-one fights that disregard any logical approach. Ultimately, *Love Hurts* is a disappointing experience—it's disjointed, poorly made, and lacks genuine substance.
