I quickly realized this wasn’t really made for me, but I felt compelled to watch it simply because of Kate Beckinsale—I didn't want to miss seeing her. I enjoy historical dramas with all the trappings: the beautiful clothing, horseback riding scenes, refined English language and customs; these things appeal to me greatly. Especially Jane Austen’s stories, which I consider essential viewing for anyone familiar with her major works. My main problem was how it looked; it felt more like a play brought to life than a film, though that's often the style of adaptations from Jane Austen's writing. I don’t want to criticize the performances—everyone involved, including Kate Beckinsale, did a fine job. The story itself wasn’t bad either, and reminded me somewhat of 'Emma,' also by the same author, but I was let down by how it was adapted for the screen. I'm aware that some viewers enjoyed this film, and my phrasing might upset them, but I don't intend to offend anyone or the movie itself; I just want to express my honest feelings. It seems I simply chose poorly—the film didn’t meet my expectations. The pacing was slow, though the length felt appropriate enough to overlook any moments where it dragged. Aside from that one significant issue, this is a pleasant film and certainly not terrible to watch once. I say this hoping you might have different tastes than I do. Ultimately, many people will see it and share their opinions—positive, negative, or somewhere in between—and there’s nothing anyone can do about that. _5/10_
