It's remarkable how distinct and upbeat Love and Monsters is when set against most other films featuring monsters; it’s a genuinely enjoyable experience. I wasn’t anticipating much from Love and Monsters—the previews suggested something ordinary, destined for streaming services and quickly forgotten. However, it turned out to be a likable film mixing comedy with creatures, action sequences, and romantic elements. The contrast between Dylan O’Brien's character, Joel, who is relentlessly positive and good-natured, and the bleak, monster-infested environment he lives in creates an amusing and unusual pairing. All of the characters are fun and endearing, and the narrative itself is engaging. Even with a desolate setting, the movie maintains a cheerful tone. The monsters looked funny but also disturbing and imaginative, resembling something like twisted Pokémon. My only real issue is that the computer-generated imagery seemed inexpensive and not particularly impressive, though it was probably the best they could manage given their resources. I’d be pleased to see more stories set in this world with these characters, although I don't expect that will happen.
