Love Actually had potential; it seemed poised to be something special. While certain moments and characters resonated with me, the film’s flaws significantly diminished its impact. The movie would have been much better if two storylines were completely removed: the unnecessary and vulgar subplot involving a washed-up singer in a Christmas song contest, and the ridiculous sequence about a man traveling to Wisconsin and meeting three attractive women. Eliminating those segments could have allowed for greater focus on Laura Linney’s character's relationship with her brother and her romantic feelings, which faded out abruptly, as well as on Emma Thompson’s marriage, which initially seemed promising but ultimately ended with an unsatisfying conclusion. Alternatively, more attention could have been given to Natalie, the prime minister’s love interest, who made a strong impression whenever she appeared and deserved considerably more screen time. It offered moments of enjoyment and genuine emotion, and I imagine I might watch this film again, provided I can skip over some parts.
