The plot of "Lou" involves a kidnapping scenario that feels fairly standard, however, Allison Janney and Jurnee Smollett’s performances are so engaging that they significantly improve what might have been a predictable story. Considering the film's limited promotion and modest budget, Michael McDonough’s cinematography is surprisingly good; it makes for a more compelling experience thanks to his skill in moving the camera and using the setting effectively. The editing is also well-done, which aids in making the infrequent but intense fight scenes work within a movie largely centered on the two main characters and their individual journeys. The final section takes some chances by attempting to challenge viewers, though it remains an acceptable film overall. Rating: B-
