The film isn’t a crude sex comedy like the “American Pie” movies, which is a relief, nor would I call it a straightforward romantic comedy, even though there are romantic elements; instead, it's primarily a college-based drama with some funny moments—essentially a dramedy. Biggs is easy to root for as the central character who’s maturing into adulthood, and Suvari is charmingly appealing in her role as the girl he wants. People who object to aspects of the movie, like Dora making a poor choice by sleeping with the professor (Greg Kinnear), should realize that kind of thing happens on campuses everywhere. It's a reality that many attractive young women are taken advantage of by someone slick and overconfident before they eventually learn from it. The three bothersome fraternity members who spike drinks (Zak Orth, Thomas Sadoski and Jimmi Simpson) represent people you encounter in real life; they’re just amplified for the story. Every narrative needs its antagonists, after all. A subplot involving a veterinary hospital is one of the best parts, especially the scene with the newborn kitten. It shows there's kindness at the core of the story. It isn’t as good as “Clueless,” but if you enjoyed that film, you will likely find something to like here. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 38 minutes and was filmed from November 1999 to January 2000 in Toronto, with some scenes shot in Manhattan. GRADE: B
