"Fujino" is popular among her classmates for the four-part manga she creates for the school’s weekly newsletter. Then, one day, a teacher suggests that "Kyomoto" might also contribute. She's rarely present at school; in fact, she's often labeled as truant, but he hopes this could encourage more participation from her. “Fujino” wonders how capable she could possibly be. It turns out, though, that she’s quite talented – even if she still doesn't attend regularly. As graduation approaches, "Fujino" is asked to deliver a certificate to this elusive rival, and that event sparks something neither girl would have expected. This animation carries considerable emotional weight, exploring themes of ambition and the feeling of being alone among young people who desire acceptance, direction, and companionship as they transition out of childhood and encounter a world that isn’t always kind. The girls share commonalities and distinctions; sometimes their actions are unified, at other times – not so much. As the short story unfolds and the timelines change, we gain insight into these characters' mysterious personalities and what motivates them. There's a great deal happening visually, and even for those who understand Japanese, it might be easier to follow with subtitles if you aren’t trying to read text at the top and bottom of the screen while also watching the straightforward animation. I don’t think it requires a large theater, but it is definitely worth seeing.
