Charlotte Field, the US Secretary of State—played by Charlize Theron—is quite popular and seems poised for a run at the Presidency when she runs into Fred, portrayed by Seth Rogan, at an upscale party. She represents elegance; he embodies something else entirely. It’s revealed they had a past relationship, and despite her team's reservations, she believes he could be helpful writing speeches for her. Was this a brilliant idea or a mistake? The majority of the lengthy comedy-drama seems geared toward those who enjoy Rogan's work—and I don’t count myself among them. There are moments where Theron manages to deliver some humor—like when her character takes molly before an important diplomatic meeting—but generally, it feels like a rather cheap and vulgar comedy, attempting to mask a weak script and a storyline that’s easy to guess. It does attempt to satirize the political elite and those who hold positions of power, and the supporting actors offer some assistance, but it's all familiar territory, and at over two hours, I simply couldn't connect with either of them before the hasty ending.
