I’m honestly puzzled by how good this film is. *Locke* really shouldn't be as captivating as it turns out to be. I wasn’t familiar with anything about the movie (other than the actor in the starring role) before seeing it, and if you had explained the plot and how things unfold at that point, I would have predicted a completely tedious film, at most. Nevertheless, this 2013 production is genuinely good. Tom Hardy certainly belongs among top-tier actors, so anything he’s in tends to appeal to me; though, let's disregard *The Drop* for now. He delivers an outstanding performance here—the ability to communicate so much within such limitations is truly remarkable. I watched *Deserter* before this and noticed his questionable French accent, but here he attempts a Welsh accent... and it’s wonderful. It somehow contributes something special to what's happening on screen. I shouldn’t be shocked by the quality of the writing given Steven Knight was involved; I either really like or love everything I’ve seen from him—*Hummingbird*, *Peaky Blinders*, *Taboo* (seriously hoping for that second season, guys...), *A Christmas Carol*. He clearly knows what he's doing. And the decision to have recognizable actors appear alongside Hardy through voice work alone was a clever idea, too. Driving. Birth. Football. Concrete. Yet somehow it’s an exceptional film. Isn’t that something?
