Chloë Sevigny doesn’t make a strong impression as Lizzie Borden in this somewhat stifling depiction of the Borden family. The arrival of a new housekeeper, "Bridget" (Kristen Stewart), leads to a friendship between them, and as events unfold, the familiar narrative of the axe murders and their consequences is shown. I've never found Kristen Stewart to be particularly engaging; regardless of her role, she seems detached and lifeless—and in a part that calls for considerable emotional depth, she falls short. A significant portion of the film appears more concerned with showcasing nudity and stylized, passionless lesbian encounters than exploring the murders themselves or the appalling mistreatment the sisters endured at the hands of their predatory father (Jeff Perry) and uncaring stepmother (Fiona Shaw). Since those familiar with the story already know what transpires, there's no suspense—this is simply a reimagining of events that could have offered far more if the director had prioritized developing the underdeveloped characters instead of emphasizing the visuals and the bleak musical score.
