My initial reaction to seeing Roger Moore’s first turn as "007" wasn't particularly positive. However, revisiting it now, I can see how much he brought a refined and understated quality to the character. The overt sexism that was present in Sean Connery’s portrayal has largely disappeared, giving way to a more witty, lighthearted, and playful style while still providing an enjoyable action film. The story centers on "Bond" as he looks into the deaths of several other agents, leading him to a questionable Caribbean leader named "Katanga" (Yaphet Kotto). Katanga is exploiting the fortune-telling abilities of his tarot reader, "Solitaire" (Jane Seymour), alongside a large heroin trade, in an attempt to control the international drug market. The film includes various gadgets and boasts one of the most striking opening sequences—a funeral scene—that I’ve ever encountered. Geoffrey Holder delivers a wonderfully frightening performance as "Baron Samedi," the voodoo master; and Julius Harris is memorable as "Tee Tee," who possesses a simple but formidable artificial hand. It's a dark, raw, and unsettling film that’s definitely worth seeing. The Wings theme song isn't really to my taste, though—I much prefer more impactful, powerful musical numbers.
