Jane Horrocks delivers an exceptional performance in this heartfelt narrative centered on a shy young woman whose mother, Brenda Blethyn, is involved with a disreputable talent scout portrayed by Michael Caine. Horrocks has an imaginary companion to whom she frequently sings, and when Caine hears her, he decides to propel her toward a career in show business. Blethyn shines as the grasping mother, and Caine embodies unscrupulousness as they both attempt to take advantage of their introverted daughter. Her only comfort during this ordeal comes from "Billy," played by Ewan McGregor, a pigeon enthusiast who emerges as her genuine confidant amidst the mounting stress.
