Stephen Campbell on Little Monsters

8/10 · Nov 6, 2019

_**Consistently funny and deeply heartfelt, anchored by another remarkable performance from Lupita Nyong'o**_ Like a blend of Ivan Reitman’s _Kindergarten Cop_ (1990) and Edgar Wright's _Shaun of the Dead_ (2004), _Little Monsters_ is a hilarious and surprisingly moving film that manages to breathe fresh life into the zom-com genre. The story follows a familiar path – a self-centered man is forced to care for others, discovering his better qualities and realizing he needs to change—but writer/director Abe Forsythe creates relatable characters and evokes genuine emotion despite the predictable framework. When I saw it at the 2019 IFI Horrorthon in Dublin, the audience gave it a standing ovation, even though no one from the production was present; it’s truly a feel-good movie and a successful one. The film is elevated by another outstanding performance from Lupita Nyong'o (building on her impressive, Oscar-worthy work in Jordan Peele’s _Us_), and balances humor with heartfelt moments, delivering consistent laughs alongside meaningful character development. While the core story revolves around childhood innocence, it caters to adults as well—with nudity, graphic violence, frequent profanity, and ukulele versions of Taylor Swift songs. Dave (Alexander England) is a directionless man-child who moves in with his sister Tess (Kat Stewart) and her son Felix (Diesel La Torraca) after separating from his girlfriend Sara (Nadia Townsend), who quickly finds someone new—a humorous turn of events. While taking Felix to kindergarten, Dave becomes infatuated with his teacher, Miss Caroline (Lupita Nyong'o), and eagerly volunteers as a chaperone when the class goes on a trip to Pleasant Valley Farm petting zoo. Things go well, aided by the presence of children’s entertainer Teddy McGiggle (Josh Gad) until an accident at a nearby US army base releases zombies who head straight for the petting zoo. Trapped in the zoo, Caroline tries to convince the kids that everything is part of a game. What stood out most about _Little Monsters_ wasn't the zombie element or the comedy,
