Edward G. Robinson delivers a strong performance in this early sound gangster movie. He portrays "Rico," an intelligent and driven small-time criminal who resolves to make his way in the larger city. At first, he finds employment with “Sam Vettori” (Stanley Fields), but soon after, the local Crime Commissioner "McClure" is murdered. Fortunately, a friend, "Joe Massara" (Douglas Fairbanks Jr.), happens to be working at the same establishment and alerts "Rico" before the ensuing police investigation. That’s when he begins to see possibilities for advancement. He eliminates his superior, then “Pete Montana” (Ralph Ince), who holds an even higher position. Even his friend "Joe," and his girlfriend "Olga" (Glenda Farrell) are not safe from his growing desire for power. My main reservation about the film is the conclusion; it felt a bit underwhelming, but apart from that, this is a worthwhile production from Mervyn LeRoy that truly showcased Robinson’s talents in a fast-moving and entertaining picture.
