John Chard on Little Big Man

7/10 · Sep 2, 2018

The pool of white male actors seems limitless, while the number of people in general has always been restricted. Arthur Penn directed Little Big Man, with a screenplay by Calder Willingham. The cast includes Dustin Hoffman, Faye Dunaway, Martin Balsam, Chief Dan George, and Richard Mulligan. Little Big Man is often associated with various cinematic labels like revisionist Western or anti-Western, and it’s widely appreciated for its unusual humor and cleverness. Stories that work on a symbolic level are common now, but in 1970, during the Vietnam War, they were less frequent, which made this film stand out as an interesting and challenging project. Penn seems to enjoy dismantling and satirizing the legends of the Old West through a collection of memorable characters that Jack Crabb (Hoffman) encounters throughout his life. This raises the question: was Jack Crabb the only white man who lived through Custer's final battle at Little Big Horn? The depiction of the Native Americans, specifically the Cheyenne, is excellent because they are shown as thoughtful and spiritual people; in contrast, the white characters appear emotionally flawed. It occasionally feels a bit overstated, and trimming about thirty minutes wouldn’t have diminished its impact. However, strong performances, quirky elements, and significant themes contribute to it being well-made film. 7/10
