The sense of shared experience really stands out. We observe groups of individuals sharing meals in a communal dining area while music by Flanagan and Allen plays, alongside a more subdued performance at the National Gallery attended by HM The Queen. People from diverse backgrounds—in terms of size, social standing, and profession—come together to eat, dance, sing, and perform their jobs; and without any explanatory commentary, we witness these scenes for twenty minutes in a way that feels deeply moving. We’re shown women of various ages involved in essential tasks like supporting the nation's food supply and defense efforts while everyone strives to maintain daily life. The film doesn't focus on actual combat—though signs of its impact are visible—it avoids depicting people hiding from bombings or battling constant fires. Instead, it deliberately emphasizes a sense of everyday industry that proves effective. While there are moments designed to inspire national pride, I believe the work largely refrains from wartime propaganda and instead presents archival footage highlighting the contributions of ordinary citizens who would ultimately secure victory.
