Lisa (Kathryn Newton), who tends to keep to herself, finds herself in an unusual blended family situation with her somewhat hapless father (Joe Chrest) and his new wife, the rather self-absorbed and unpleasant Janet (Carla Gugino), along with Janet's daughter, Taffy (Liza Soberano). At school, she’s developed a crush on Michael (Henry Einkenberry), who seems to reciprocate her interest to some degree. A romantic connection might have been possible if not for an unexpected electrical storm that dramatically alters the course of events. The deceased resident of the grave where she often sits while reading has been brought back to life through technology and now appears in her house, starts using her clothes, and like "ET," she’s keeping a secret from everyone. However, parts of this resurrected friend are disappearing – his ear, tongue, and hand, among other things – leading to a series of adventures that combine science fiction elements with humor and a desire for retribution as they attempt to return him to his former self, including his ability to play the piano. The film could have been considerably more enjoyable if it had fully embraced either its darker or lighter aspects. It seems to be aiming for broad appeal, which ultimately weakens both the intensity and the sophisticated nature of the humor. Several moments, particularly at the rather harsh and graphic ending, would have landed with greater impact if director Zelda Williams had targeted a more mature audience who could appreciate the dark comedy instead of softening it into something resembling a college movie. It turned out better than I initially thought it would, and Newton gives a solid performance as the story unfolds; it’s just disappointing that the film seemed unsure of its direction or intended audience.
