Zelda Willians’s feature film debut, written by Diablo Cody (Juno, Jennifer's Body), centers on a young woman dealing with immense loss—her mother was murdered—and now living under the thumb of an unkind relative alongside her supportive sister-in-law. Kathryn Newton embodies the character of Lisa exceptionally well. Labeled by what’s happened to her and choices she’s made, she exists outside the mainstream at school, frequently spending time in a vintage cemetery dating back to the 1800s, specifically near the grave of another adolescent who passed away with an unusual green glow in 1837—a detail best noticed during the credits. The film takes cues from teen romance-comedies of the eighties (it’s set in 1989), adopting their tone gently until a fairly predictable juncture; those anticipating something overly sweet will likely be surprised. It also delivers an unexpected conclusion. I believe it provided some amusement for an evening, and I'd give it a grade of 6.6 out of 10 / B simply for the entertainment value.
