This film is simply wonderful. I initially saw it some time ago and found it enjoyable, so when I spotted it on IMDB’s streaming platform recently, I decided to revisit it. My opinion hasn't changed; I still consider it excellent. It hadn't occurred to me that Steven Spielberg directed it, which probably explains a lot about its quality. The movie was developed over many years and draws inspiration from Doris Kearns Goodwin’s well-regarded nonfiction book, Team of Rivals. The performances are superb: Daniel Day-Lewis is remarkable as President Lincoln. His portrayal feels authentic and relatable, revealing various facets of the president's character. He comes across as humorous, insightful, compassionate, rough around the edges, troubled—essentially everything I’d anticipate after reading so much about him. I felt that the film’s momentum slowed down a bit during the sequences depicting the political strategies used to secure votes for the amendment Lincoln was trying to pass through Congress, but this aspect is essential to the story, demonstrating his practicality and willingness to compromise in order to accomplish what he set out to do. By focusing on Lincoln's final months in office, Spielberg managed to cover a significant period of time and examine slavery and the war from multiple viewpoints. I’m disappointed that I watched it through that streaming service; the advertisements were disruptive. They appeared at random intervals—sometimes twenty minutes apart, once just five minutes apart—and always interrupted key moments. I intend to watch it again without commercials, and I recommend you do too.
