This film concerning the poignant relationship between an older performer whose career has faded and a dancer struggling with suicidal thoughts—whom he saves and mentors—stands among the most impressive dramas I’ve encountered. Chaplin delivers a remarkable performance, handling directing, writing, and composing as well. Claire Bloom is truly excellent portraying his melancholy lover. Another highlight is seeing Chaplin alongside Buster Keaton, who makes an appearance later in the movie. The compelling narrative set behind the scenes consistently improves throughout its runtime, and every scene feels completely valuable. Regarding the film’s devastating culmination of affection, humor, dramatic tension, and a final opportunity to give everything for a moment in the limelight, it's hard to imagine anyone remaining unmoved.
