A spirited girl named "Lilo" longs for a canine companion. “626,” also called "Stitch," is the result of unethical experimentation by the scientist "Jookiba," condemned to perpetual darkness and left on an empty moon. Fortunately, the captain of his transport, "Gantu," isn't particularly skilled, allowing him to escape and land in Hawaii. Disoriented by this unfamiliar environment—and unable to swim—he’s taken for a stray dog and held at the pound. There he encounters “Lilo,” who has been told she will receive a dog of her own. The story that follows is about how they connect. "Lilo" is dealing with difficulties within her family, thanks to social worker "Bubbles," but "Stitch" wants to keep things lively and, if needed, use the people around them as shields against agents from the "Galactic Federation." The familiar lessons are present—the importance of cooperation, overcoming loneliness, experiencing love, and valuing kinship—but Dean DeBlois presents these ideas in a clever way with many entertaining adventures, some sharp jokes, and even a touch of intimidation from the Grand Councilwoman, who seems to be modeled after Glenn Close. I wasn't fond of the animation style; it felt overly focused on eyes, but the film’s colors are bright and cheerful, and the characters remain captivating throughout.
