Alan, portrayed by Don Cheadle, seems to have everything: a successful dental practice, a loving family, and even a Volvo. Despite this outward appearance of contentment, he’s beginning to feel somewhat burdened, particularly when a patient, Angela (Liv Tyler), requests an excessive amount of work on her teeth. While driving home one day, he spots Charlie (Adam Sandler), someone he shared an apartment with during college. Unbeknownst to Alan, 9/11 had a devastating effect on his friend, leaving him consumed by despair—a situation vastly different from Alan’s own struggles, yet one that also requires attention. Trying to elicit any meaningful conversation proves difficult. Charlie has lost hope in himself and in life; the question becomes whether his old friend can help him cope with his grief and isolation while confronting his personal challenges. The final thirty minutes offer some redemption, especially during scenes featuring only Cheadle and Sandler, which highlight a deeply intimate connection between the characters. However, I didn’t experience that intensity as much as I wished, and there were too many diversions preventing me from fully engaging with the narrative's core. It seems the intention might have been to contrast Alan’s relatively minor frustrations with Charlie’s profound tragedy, but this felt underdeveloped because Charlie’s character wasn't explored with sufficient depth, and the attempts at humor didn’t quite land. The film tackles a difficult subject—grief and victimhood—and occasionally does so powerfully, though not consistently enough. It could be Sandler attempting to showcase his versatility, but I often remained skeptical.
