Based on what I read beforehand, I thought Like Father would be an unconventional romantic comedy. My expectation was that the father character would either help or complicate his daughter’s search for love, maybe by making it easier or harder for her to reconcile with the man she abandoned at the altar due to her work commitments right up until their wedding day. However, as the title suggests, this isn't a romance; instead, it’s a film about a father and daughter trying to build a relationship. The story centers on how she will feel about her dad reappearing in her life. It unfolds during a cruise—originally intended for her honeymoon—and tracks their awkward attempts to establish some kind of connection while sharing a table with other passengers. I have to imagine that Royal Caribbean contributed financially, since the ship and its name are so prominently featured, and everyone seems genuinely happy, like they do in advertisements. There's character development present, as you’d anticipate, and the two main actors deliver believable portrayals as they navigate the challenges of getting to know each other after he left his family years earlier. It's not something I'm eager to rewatch, but it was diverting enough to be a worthwhile use of my time. The film is more enjoyable if you’re a fan of Kelsey Grammer, which I am.
