Pixar’s newest offering tells the backstory of one of their most recognizable characters. "Lightyear" begins by explaining that in 1995, Andy from “Toy Story” received a toy modeled after this very film. The movie follows a large spaceship far out in space which encounters an unfamiliar planet and awakens Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear (Chris Evans) to investigate. Along with another ranger and a new recruit, Buzz examines the planet but finds it dangerous and quickly leaves. During their escape, their ship is damaged, leaving them stranded and needing to build a settlement. Years later, Buzz prepares for a test flight using a newly developed fuel source that the colony hopes will allow them to travel at incredible speeds across vast distances. Everything seems to be going well until an unexpected malfunction reveals that Buzz’s brief flight has actually spanned several years on the planet. Despite this, he repeatedly attempts the journey and returns to find his friends growing older, starting families, and experiencing loss, with only his robotic cat Sox (Peter Sohn) remaining as a link to his past and offering support. While this storyline would be compelling enough, it’s actually just the foundation for a larger narrative involving an invading robot army and a villain called Zurg who poses a threat to Buzz and a hastily assembled team of volunteers tasked with saving the day. The film boasts stunning animation and retains the humor and warmth characteristic of Pixar's best work, occasionally delivering emotional moments that might bring audiences to tears, as many previous Pixar films have done. As this is the first of three upcoming Pixar movies to be released in theaters, it’s tempting to call it a return to form for Disney/Pixar, but I think that would be an understatement. The movie combines humor, action, and memorable characters into a very enjoyable and captivating experience—one of the most rewarding Pixar films in recent years and truly deserving of their reputation. I'd love to see more adventures with Buzz and his team because "Lightyear" feels like a new Pixar classic that everyone in the family will enjoy. 4.5 stars out of 5
