The film feels like an unsuccessful reimagining of the 1990 Jean Claude Van Damme film Lionheart. Van Damme was at his best when that movie was made; he seemed believable as a rising fighter then. However, it doesn't work well now with a 58-year-old character presented as a "street fighter." It’s disappointing because I am generally fond of Frank Grillo’s performances. As expected, the action sequences come across as stiff and unbelievable. Even Scott Adkins, who I think would have been a more suitable choice for the lead role, is unable to redeem this action-martial arts film. Ultimately, the weak plot, problematic casting choices, and subpar fight scenes combine to make it an unappealing experience. The title, Lights Out, seems rather fitting.
