The horror film *Lights Out* (2013) taps directly into a basic human apprehension—the fear of darkness. Director David Sandberg crafted an impressive horror short in just three minutes. He built the entire experience around one central idea, that dread of what lurks when there’s no light, and produced a relentlessly tense sequence without using any spoken words. It's difficult to offer much analysis about something so brief, except to say I felt my pulse racing for nearly the whole time it played. What makes this film work is how short it is. There’s no opportunity to learn anything; and that’s perfectly fine. The movie explores the unsettling feeling of not knowing what might be moving in the shadows. We don't require any background information about whatever is out there, or even a lot about the person facing it. This is precisely the kind of thing that could easily haunt your child’s dreams for quite some time, and you might not even realize they’d seen it.
