After a robbery goes sideways in a Southwestern town, Paul Hogan plays Jack Kane, who finds himself partnered with an inexperienced companion (Cuba Gooding Jr.) following the incident. Kane intends to pull off one final lucrative heist before relocating to New York City alongside his girlfriend from the saloon (Beverly D'Angelo). "Lightning Jack," released in 1994, offers a diverting Western performance from Hogan, though it doesn’t reach the level of outright comedy found in something like “Blazing Saddles.” It shares similarities with films such as "The War Wagon,” “Sam Whiskey,” “Something Big," "Cattle Annie and Little Britches,” “Maverick” and “The Lone Ranger." "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" also comes to mind, although that film carries a more somber tone. It's not a particularly remarkable movie and has a somewhat deliberate pace, but the scenery is impressive, and watching the characters’ connection unfold provides some amusement. D'Angelo contributes positively as well. The initial bank robbery mirrors the actual 1876 raid in Northfield, Minnesota; however, Cole Younger survived with only a wound and was later incarcerated. While there, he worked as a printer’s devil for a newspaper. He received parole in 1901 and subsequently wrote a memoir, gave lectures, and participated in a Wild West show alongside Frank James. Shortly before his death in 1915, Younger experienced a religious conversion and expressed regret for his past crimes. In contrast to this, Jim, Cole’s brother, was also paroled in 1901 but struggled to adapt and died by suicide fifteen months later in a Saint Paul hotel room. Ultimately, if you enjoyed the “Crocodile Dundee” movies, there's a good chance you’ll find something to like here. The movie has a running time of 1 hour, 37 minutes, and filming took place in Santa Fe; Tucson and Page, Arizona; Moab, Utah; and Colorado, with some interior scenes shot on the Gold Coast in Australia.
