Simon Wincer directed Lightning Jack, with Paul Hogan writing the story. Hogan also takes the lead role as the title character, joined by Cuba Gooding Jr., Beverly D’Angelo, Pat Hingle and L.Q. Jones. Bruce Rowland composed the music, and David Eggby was responsible for the cinematography. After making a splash in film with Crocodile Dundee in 1986, Paul Hogan seemed poised to become a major movie star. However, despite the success of the initial Dundee sequel, his film career didn’t really take off. So it's interesting to look back at his films outside of the Dundee series. Lightning Jack is a comedy Western that casts Hogan as Lightning Jack Kane, an Australian in the American Old West. He wants to be famous, to have a large reward offered for his capture, so after some unfortunate circumstances bring him together with Ben Doyle (Gooding Jr.), who doesn't speak, they embark on a quest to become notorious criminals. Essentially, that’s what it is, and if you strip away everything else, it’s mainly an opportunity for Hogan to play himself in a Western setting. It's lighthearted entertainment from a likeable comedic actor; it might not be as hilarious or have the cleverness of Crocodile Dundee, but did it really deserve all the negative criticism? The plot is quite thin, resulting in a film that feels more like a collection of funny situations strung together (you’ll want to adjust your comedy expectations to something mild), but it's enjoyable and agreeable because Hogan and Gooding Jr. are easy to watch. The scenery is also beautiful, with the locations looking great thanks to Eggby’s work on films like Mad Max and Quigley Down Under. D’Angelo has a role that goes beyond just being a stereotypical character, and she's very good in it. L.Q. Jones (Ride the High Country/Major Dundee) and Pat Hingle (Nevada Smith/Hang 'Em High) add some Western authenticity, and brief appearances by Roger Daltrey and Roger Clemens remind you that this is just meant to be a bit of fun. It doesn't reach the level of Almost An Angel, which was unfairly overlooked, and obviously the first two Dundee movies are in a different league altogether. However, it has its good points and makes for an acceptable way to spend time if you like Westerns and want something undemanding. 6/10
