I approached this film with little anticipation since I’ve never cared for Timothy Dalton’s portrayal of James Bond, and my concerns weren't unfounded. It turned out to be a rather distant and, honestly, quite disagreeable adventure featuring Fleming’s iconic character, who is pursuing an evil drug dealer responsible for feeding "Felix" (David Hedison) to a shark and also killing that man's recently married wife. What follows is simply a succession of forgettable action sequences lacking any real sense of danger. Anthony Zerbe fails to convince as the supposedly threatening “Milton Krest” – the name itself seems ridiculous, doesn’t it? – and Robert Davi isn’t particularly memorable either in his role as the main villain, "Sanchez." While this isn't unheard of for a Bond movie, this one leans too heavily on tired stereotypes without offering any enjoyment; the playful humor is absent, and the lead actor seems to have lost much of his charm. As an adventure film, it’s passably diverting – there are gadgets present, but the ordinary dialogue becomes tiresome fairly quickly, and it somehow feels less “British” than earlier installments, being noticeably more brutal and violent instead. It's acceptable, though I wouldn’t suggest that Connery or Moore would lose any sleep over it.
