This is an exceptional example of queer horror done right. Adrian Chiarella finds a clever way to challenge the familiar narrative surrounding conversion therapy, transforming the supposed purification process into something truly terrifying—a constantly changing, visceral nightmare. The being that manifests as the boys’ deepest longings, which are for one another, creates a powerfully evocative and mournful symbolic representation. Tyson Perkins' stunningly beautiful yet desolate cinematography of the Australian countryside contributes to an overwhelming sense of foreboding in every shot. It manages to be both intensely atmospheric, profoundly romantic, and deeply saddening.
