It gave me the same level of enjoyment as 'Flags of Our Fathers' had, which is what I was looking for. While I think the earlier movie edges this one out slightly, the two are remarkably close in quality – they’re both really good films. Ken Watanabe, Kazunari Ninomiya and Ryo Kase were all terrific; I found myself appreciating their performances throughout 'Letters from Iwo Jima'. It was fascinating to experience the Battle of Iwo Jima through a Japanese perspective, especially after having seen it from the American side before. It’s also good that the film handles this story accurately and presents it in Japanese, even though it came out of an American studio. Apparently, the movie performed well in Japan, which suggests they did a solid job with it.
