Detective Sergeant Roger Murtaugh, nearing retirement, isn't thrilled to be paired with a new partner. His surprise deepens when that partner turns out to be Detective Martin Riggs, who, following his wife’s death, seems to have little concern for his own safety or the well-being of others. While lacking in depth regarding story and characters, *Lethal Weapon* still stands out as a prime example of how an action buddy film should function. It's approximately one hour and forty-five minutes packed with jokes, action sequences, villainy, heroic acts, and differences between generations and cultures. What’s truly essential is a strong pairing of actors who have great chemistry together – and Richard Donner’s movie delivers this in abundance. Mel Gibson portrays Riggs, a trigger-happy character teetering on the brink, and he works exceptionally well alongside Danny Glover's (outstanding) weary veteran detective who's "too old for this nonsense." Riggs quickly became an iconic cinematic hero—an unstoppable force with a quick remark and a mischievous look—and Gibson is excellent in the role. Gary Busey’s henchman makes appearances with unsettling glee, and Shane Black’s script has energy as the impressive stunts begin. Mitchell Ryan's portrayal of the main antagonist, The General, feels almost like an afterthought, and there are some minor editing issues, but *Lethal Weapon* ultimately possesses a successful combination that audiences enthusiastically embraced. Three subsequent films, varying in quality, would be released, but this one established a standard for the genre and deserves to be watched again whenever you feel like it. 8/10
