The latest chapter of the series finds “Riggs” (Mel Gibson) and “Murtaugh” (Danny Glover), whose bodies seem to ache as much as the dialogue does, launching into action with a bang. This time around, Chinese Triad gangs are involved in smuggling people and counterfeiting money—activities that could spark a full-blown war between the sharply dressed “Wah Sing Ku” (Jet Li) and local crime boss “Uncle Benny” (Kim Chan). Adding to the chaos, IAD detective “Lorna” (Rene Russo) is expecting a baby with “Riggs,” “Murtaugh’s” daughter is about to make him a grandfather, another officer, "Butters" (Chris Rock), and then there's the eccentric "Leo” (Joe Pesci), whose bizarre advice and methods have to be witnessed to fully appreciate. Feeling sorry for the newly arrived “Hong” family, “Murtaugh” alerts authorities, leading the Triads to torch his house. He and “Riggs” narrowly save the family, and the conflict escalates from there. Chris Rock and Joe Pesci grated on my nerves throughout the entire film, but Gibson and Glover have a wonderful rapport—they clearly know each other so well by now—and this installment boasts one of the most thrilling car chases I’ve ever seen. I really hope the city had extensive insurance coverage! The movie moves at a brisk pace, and while the script is full of unnecessary swear words, it does offer some sharp lines, particularly for Gibson, as things build to an energetic conclusion filled with gunfire and punches and even more crumbling concrete. This formula has been successful up until this point: putting two appealing actors into dangerous situations, providing just enough peril, but also plenty of humor. Maybe the focus should shift away from that now, and everyone involved should head off to Palm Springs, raise tadpoles, and let us remember them at their best.
