The audience clearly gets what they desire. This third entry in the well-liked Lethal Weapon franchise finds Murtaugh looking forward to retirement, but he and Riggs encounter a former police officer involved with specialized bullets designed to kill cops. There were four Lethal Weapon movies altogether, and despite their declining quality as each one was released, they all generated substantial profits. It’s hard to fault those responsible for maximizing the earnings when audiences kept buying tickets, isn't it? With a production budget of $35 million, this third film grossed $321 million worldwide, which practically guaranteed another installment. But is Lethal Weapon 3 genuinely enjoyable? Did the consistent moviegoers get something worthwhile for their money? Likely, if you were already invested in the series, it gives you exactly what you’d expect. Director Richard Donner and his writing team recognized that things needed to be escalated. The storyline isn't particularly deep, but with more explosions, increased action sequences, and a portrayal of Riggs as unusually silly, the approach proves effective – even if Riggs and Murtaugh now feel like primarily a comedic duo (aside from one romantic subplot). Rene Russo appears as Internal Affairs sergeant Lorna Cole, who delivers both opportunities for jokes involving Riggs and a potential romance. And, predictably, Joe Pesci returns with comic relief as Leo Getz. Stuart Wilson takes on the villainous role with enthusiasm, and to demonstrate that it's not just about action and humor, the film also includes a poignant storyline concerning children using firearms—and those who supply them. It’s all straightforward and fleeting within the realm of blockbuster entertainment, and yes, it isn’t as strong as the earlier films in the series, but it remains an enjoyable experience for fans of the franchise. 7/10
