The team’s previous triumph seems to have paved the way for a new case involving suspected smuggling activities centered around the South African consulate, according to their understanding. This belief stems from a prior search that uncovered a substantial quantity of Krugerrand coins, followed by an abrupt warning advising Murtaugh (Danny Glover) and his family to stay away. While the investigation focuses on drugs, questions arise regarding how these substances are generating significant sums of money and being exported from the United States. Captain Murphy (Steve Kaplan) assigns Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Murtaugh the task of protecting Getz (Joe Pesci), who may possess vital information, though he’s also a prime target, quickly escalating the situation into a dangerous assignment. Overseeing operations from afar is Rudd (Joss Ackland), whose demeanor comes across as excessively self-satisfied. Riggs, known for his unconventional methods, attempts to circumvent diplomatic immunity by pursuing a relationship with Rudd's secretary, Rika (Patsy Kensit). As casualties increase and gunfire erupts, they must act quickly before their targets disappear completely. I wasn’t convinced this sequel lived up to the standard set by the initial film. Despite Ackland’s subtly threatening performance, the rest of the movie feels rather commonplace and uninspired. Pesci's acting seems limited, and his constant delivery of unremarkable lines diminished any enjoyment I might have derived from it. Glover and Gibson don't get enough screen time to sustain interest, and even with numerous action sequences, the overall feel is reminiscent of an outdated "Starsky and Hutch." The script lacks its earlier wit and inventiveness, and Riggs’ playful, appealing qualities have been substituted by a more abrasive and less pleasant persona. It's acceptable viewing, but it’s clear that the series is starting to show signs of weariness and redundancy.
