I’m not sure if this is my first foray into a Chinese-style western, but it's quite humorous and sharply satirical, which feels very much in line with Jiang Wen’s work. My initial impression was that it would resemble Mel Brooks' "Blazing Saddles," and there are similarities to be found. However, it ultimately proves to be considerably more nuanced than that film. The storyline unfolds almost like a strategic contest between two incredibly clever minds. Apparently, according to one Chinese critic, the movie is filled with wordplay and jokes in the original language that get lost on those of us who aren’t fluent. It remains an impressive piece of work even with some of its subtleties missed. I can only guess at how truly exceptional it must be when experienced in its native form. Just a heads-up: the film moves very quickly, and the narrative is quite intricate. You might want to get ready to stop playback and rewind occasionally.
