Antoine and his younger friend Fred, portrayed by Guillaume Depardieu—who bears a striking resemblance to Julian Sands—share a rundown apartment and struggle financially, often barely able to afford basic groceries. Antoine considers himself a playwright but is experiencing a lengthy period without success; Fred is a carefree layabout who prefers to spend his days in bed while they both harbor thoughts of girlfriends, whether real or imagined. Reaching the point where their money has run out and facing imminent eviction, they resolve to rob the offices where Antoine works. This plan turns into a clumsy undertaking for the pair, but it also results in them being caught by his superiors, leading to an unusual form of payback—a martial arts magazine! Predictably, this creates problems for the two men as Antoine is overcome with depression. Fortunately, Lorette, played by Marie Trintignant, is there to help guide them through this emotional turmoil, just as Fred finds himself entangled in a three-way relationship. While it’s admittedly somewhat artificial and the plot developments often feel like one disaster after another, the connection between the two men is believable and quite enjoyable, significantly enhanced by the clever and insightful writing. In its own way, it's a touching story about dependence rooted in genuine affection for two individuals who might seemingly thrive better when separated. The film begins strongly and offers an amusing look at their lives that’s well worth ninety minutes of anyone’s time.
