Wuchak on Leprechaun's Revenge

5/10 · Jun 10, 2024

A sinister leprechaun is unleashed upon the community. In Keening, a town located in eastern USA, a young woman (Courtney Halverson) unintentionally brings back to life a being connected to her Irish background while she’s out hunting alongside her grandfather (William Devane). They try to persuade her doubtful father, who also serves as the sheriff (Billy Zane), as they work to discover how to put an end to this murderous little fiend. "Red Clover," released in 2012, was initially called “Leprechaun’s Revenge,” but it shares no connection with the films starring Warwick Davis. The creature presented here is more unpleasant, devoid of any humor, and intensely malicious; its actions include tearing faces off, disemboweling people, and bisecting a person. The writer also penned "Headless Horseman" and the contemporary “American Horror House,” and later directed “Sharknado” the following year. It’s clearly made with the same low-budget TV aesthetic. Courtney Halverson, who has red hair, is adequate in her role as the teenage lead; she possesses a distinctive appearance, although she appears very thin. The filmmakers needed someone who could hold the audience's interest in this kind of movie, similar to Cindy Busby’s performance in “Behemoth” or Danielle C. Ryan’s work in "Snowbeast," both released a year prior. Erin Karpluk from “Wyvern” is another good example, as is Joelle Westwood in “The Hunting,” which came out more recently. I appreciated the green-tinted visuals and how the performers approached their roles with sincerity, occasionally injecting some dry wit. However, the father’s explanation for his wife's disappearance felt absurd and left a negative impression, as did the conclusion overall. The film has a running time of 1 hour, 28 minutes, and was filmed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. GRADE: C
