This 1997 video release, "Leprechaun 4: In Space," seems to be poking fun at both Star Trek and the initial two Aliens films. The story unfolds in a future setting where space marines are sent to another planet with the mission of preventing a Leprechaun—played by Warwick Davis—from causing trouble for a Dominian princess, Zarina (Rebecca Carlton). Overseeing this operation is Dr. Mittenhand (Guy Siner), a scientist who’s clearly off his rocker. Once the Leprechaun appears on board their ship, things quickly spiral out of control. Having watched only the first four installments in the series, I would rank this as my second favorite, following "Leprechaun 3" from 1995. It's a low-budget horror comedy, and to enjoy it you really have to accept it for what it is. Davis is predictably amusing in his role, and the cast seems to be playing everything with a sense of irony. The scene where the Leprechaun returns is particularly well done; it’s both humorous and unsettling. The way Dr. Mittenhand reverts to his original form also works pretty well. Rebecca Carlton and Jessica Collins stand out as Princess Zarina and Tina, respectively, although I feel that Zarina's character could have been explored more fully. "Jaxon X," released in 2002, is similar in tone, but it benefited from a larger budget and ultimately proves to be better overall. The film’s running time is one hour and thirty-five minutes, and filming took place at Front Street Studios in Los Angeles. Brent Jasmer and Tim Colceri portray the principal space marines, while Debbe Dunning has a smaller role. Gary Grossman also appears. My rating: B/B- (6.5 out of 10).
