The central figure of this motion picture isn't presented as entirely human; or if he is, then for today’s audiences, he comes across as something of a trickster. By portraying a religious symbol in this way, we are introduced to someone relatable—someone who acts and thinks much like ordinary people do. The unfortunate widow finds herself strangely drawn to this priest, whom I perceived as being quite vulnerable and possibly isolated. He seems to attempt to control her, while she is only searching for authenticity and kindness. I don’t believe the director succeeded in crafting a compelling film with these peculiar characters and their actions. Frankly, I struggle to grasp the underlying message of the movie from an individualistic perspective. While I appreciate seeing depictions of past eras—the vintage telephones, roads, clothing, accents—and enjoyed the atmosphere of the small village and office—I have to say that the film’s philosophy feels antiquated, even for its own time. The dialogue often seems nonsensical, especially her passive nature, and the movie concludes, perhaps intending to offer a cautionary tale about priests; however, it's illogical to invite vulnerable women into private conversations and then engage in emotional manipulation under the guise of faith.
