“Leo” centers on a lizard who, alongside his tortoise friend “Squirtle,” has spent years observing students in a school classroom. Through this experience, they’ve developed an ability to quickly assess the children—identifying those who are privileged, isolated, or otherwise distinct—and have grown somewhat weary and jaded as a result. A casual discussion sparks concern when "Leo" realizes he might be nearing the end of his life! He's resolved not to meet his final days confined within his enclosure, and when a strict substitute teacher ("Ms. Malkin") assigns each student to take a pet home for the weekend, he views this as a chance to escape. His attempts at breaking free initially unfold in a comedic fashion, but soon evolve into moments of connection with each child. He can communicate! They can communicate! However, his conversations are reserved only for them—they are special...! "Leo" quickly becomes a confidant and source of support, almost like a social worker or therapist, gaining popularity despite not getting any closer to freedom. Will he reach the Everglades before his life comes to an end at age 75? The film brought to mind “Ron’s Gone Wrong” (2021) because it employs animation—and a script with a sarcastic and perceptive tone—to highlight how children are increasingly lacking parental guidance. When allowed to operate independently, they often rely on the approval of others for validation or control. While the portrayals of the human characters feel exaggerated at times, this does effectively demonstrate how varying levels of parenting can lead to a wide range of vulnerable young people. The conclusion features an entertaining bus pursuit and some intimidating crocodiles—but are they truly more frightening than an annoyed "Ms. Malkin"? It’s worth seeing for yourself...
